The Plaque Says ...

The plague placed outside the "Dan Bonfigli Tennis Pavilion" will have a photo of Dan and the following words:
Dan Bonfigli
1958-2008
14 Years of Dedication
Coach-Mentor-Friend

Dan's mission was to grow the game of tennis in Vermont. He started by planting the seed in our community and through his innovative programs, knowledge of the game and tireless effort, it blossomed into many successful programs offered to thousands of juniors and adults. His ideas were soon adopted by others and his creativity spread throughout the state and New England. Dan's lessons took place on the court but for many they reached far beyond the game of tennis. He shared his passion and love for the game with all of us and it will forever live inside the walls of this tennis pavilion and in our programs. Victory here will always be measured by passion and desire.

Two Sisters inspired by Dan...

Our family continues to grieve with you .My daughters looked forward to the junior tournaments that Dan held atEssex Junction. We all knew that Sportsmanship and Fun were the requirements for the day!One year, both Sayre and Emma won their respective age divisions and wehave a very proud photo with Dan presenting their trophies! When ourgirls were at Team Tennis Sectionals in Connecticut 2 summers ago, the professional photographer snapped a picture of Emma's beautiful forehandand right behind the fence was Dan: looking on, smiling very approvingly! That poster is blown up and framed on Emma's bedroom wall. With tears in my children's eyes the night I told them about Dan's passing, Emma said, "Well Mom, now I can always know that Dan is that Angel looking over my shoulder, just like in my picture."Thank you for helping us all to communicate with you.
Our hearts ache with you.

A true friendship ...

As we started our family in 1982 Miami Shores on 102nd Street, one of the 1st neighbors we met on 101st Street were the Dan and Kathy Bonfigli. What a wonderful family they have been and it further solidified our friendship through Nancy Powers teaching at Miami Country Day School with the Dan and Kathy Bonfigli for many years. A true friendship was quickly struck with Dan, as I started training for triathlons. Both Dan and Kathy were riding back then and we started riding to Key Biscayne and back on the weekends. Other rides in the early mornings before work to Miami Beach were most memorable. Even today, I relive those rides, which were so enjoyable. As our sons grew up, Jimmy, now 20, started to play on the EJHL Green Mountain Glades in 2004, a junior hockey team in Burlington, Vermont. We were reconnected through this event to the Bonfigli's and were able to travel to Vermont over the past three years for visits to Dan and Kathy and relive our days in Miami Shores. The Lord moves in mysterious ways and we truly believe that this course of events was meant to reunite our families once again. We shall miss Dan and will continue to support Kathy and Gabby in life.

My cousin Danny...

Long ago and far away... My childhood was peculiar in one thing, not having a cousin close by... I was hearing of my cousin Danny, I could see him in photographs, even listening to his voice through cassette recordings but I could never imagine how it would feel that this person would be so loveable. In my home town, Punta Chica(circa 1972) we met have shared many happy days, those were times to enjoy, to play, to learn. Danny was always the 'hot' one, his physical power and his abilities. He was also very likeable, always ready for the jokes to make people laugh. Something here made him come back a few years later, it was the 1978 Soccer World Cup taken place in Buenos Aires. Then we were adolescents, with different interests in other things ... and people. We shared several outings. a soccer game at the River Plate "Monumental" Stadium, several night escapades where , by the way, he showed us his total devotion for "Saturday Night Fever" Later, in '89 , with Grandma Laura's help, I took a trip to the USA. There I had the experience of life close to my uncles and cousins, mixing up with their lives and experiences. Danny again was there for me to make my stay better, he gave me a few lessons in tennis. His vocation for the sport was always evident and only second to his generosity . Then, in '89, after starting our own families I took another trip to the US, this time for business reasons and accompanied by my wife Diana and 3 year old daughter Barbara. This time was in Miami Shores, Florida where Kathy was in the last stages of pregnancy with Gabriela. She was so sweet in receiving us and made us feel at home. That was the time when I realized we were connected beyond our mere blood ties. Dan then, revealed a special happiness, because of the incoming birth of her first daughter. We spent a short but enjoyable time together and also had the chance to meet their great friend Ed J. Olmos. I had returned to their place sometime later by myself, and again Dan made me feel that I wasn't alone. He made room for me in their living room where I spent a few days, I went with him to Boca Raton where he was to compete in a Triathlon. I always was impressed by his willpower as in this case to reach a goal only very few dared to reach... Later in life came some difficult years when I would've liked to travel but could not afford it. Time went by and our lives were tying us with our own responsibilities and different agendas and away from our affections... Now, far away, after so many years and even if they were just a short part of my life, my best memories are of him, they were engraved in my mind and I'll treasure them forever because to a certain extent they made me the person I am today... Now, I am left with these images, those moments, with that Danny, forever... ...and all that energy that you employed to achieve your dreams, dear cousin, were not in vain, because they inspired all of us...
Your cousin Andy Michalla

Mark's Eulogy...

"champion"
one rule I should mention....please hold applause until points are finished in their entirety.

I sat up late last night wondering how would I ever properly pay tribute to the greatest man I have ever had the privledge of learning from, my big brother dan. Due to the events of the week the 4 younger brothers played hot potatoe with the task of writting the speach of a lifetime for our older brother dan. Last night with no time remaining a family friend looked at me and said "do it, you have to do it"I agreed but still wondered if I was the right person to do it and if i could even come up with the words to honor him the way my heart told me he deserved to be honored.15-loveI began to think back and reflect on the incredible life of Daniel Bonfigli, dan was the ultimate competitor, one that could completely ignore intense pain during a triatholon or a high speed bike race and grit his teeth and simply overcome the seemingly impossible. Time and time again he would prove that will and desire and passion were qualities that meant much more than just raw talent and althletic ability.i recall stories even legends like the time that dan once busted open a large bee hive with one of our neighbors in the back yard and the story goes that dan outran 200 bees that were faster than jesse owens as they chased him accross the entire neighborhood. I believe this only becuase I have witnessed dan incredible ability to simply will his way to victory like no one i have ever known.

dan not only was a great competitor in all aspects of life, he was even better known as a teacher and for his ability to pass on his skill, knowledge and passion for tennis and sports to hundreds, even thousands of individuals over the span of 35 years. As a teenager dan tought tennis to youngsters williston and then shortly after attending UVM dan and kathy moved on to texas and florida where dan helped countless children gain confidence and new ability through his tireless efforts and patience.
dan got excited about the simple things in life...when roger federer wore a tux onto the court at the open and they played the start wars theme, dan was loving it, he loved the game, all the little details.
30-loveafter precious little gabriella was born dan and kathy moved back to vt from miami and settled into essex junction where dans dream to build the best childrens tennis prgram in the country started to become a reality. during this time dan was honored with various awards and accolades and rightfully so. but what seemed most important to him was that he was honored with hundreds of students that took to the sport that he loved so much. you see, he felt responsible for their happiness when it came to knowing and loving tennis, and in reality he was.dan knew he wasnt going to play in the us open or make it to wimbledon but he always believed that his students could. every student would leave the court knowing that their coach was backing them 100% and that they really had a reason to have hope. even until only a few short weeks ago, dan was still on the court donating his time to others that were in his eyes less fortunate than him. how could it be that someone that we all thought would not even be around months earlier be on the court giving to others, how could it be.dans belief in others was spectacular, in this last year, dan traveled to watch his daughter gabriella play her soccer games for the UVM team and did it with the expectation that he would witness his talented daughter do nothing more than play the game she loved. he didnt need goals, he didnt need wins, he was just so thankful to be a part of the game.that is the lesson we will learn from dan, thats the lesson he was teaching us all along. just being in the game is the most precious thing of all. just being there is precious. 40-lovedans life was really a tennis match and after all, thats what he wanted it to be,... in the end he had some incredible winners, seemingly impossble shots that bent around the net post grazing the lines spurring on the "come on" yell that only dan could pull off in a cool way. yet at the same time he had some shots that hit the tape and landed on the wrong side of the net.... but not once did he blame it on his racket and not once did he get angry with his opponent, dan simply plowed on and moved closer and closer towards the end of the match with a diamond of an attitude.dan battled all the way to tennis heaven with a smile on his face, we will all never forget his graceful way of letting us know that life is all about being in the game. just being there is precious.

game, set, match and champion, Dan Bonfigli

You will be very sorely missed but never, ever forgotten.

Celebration a part of impressive weekend...

What an impressive weekend. After meeting all of Dan's family it is clear that he was blessed with a strong supporting cast. Many special moments helped remind us that Dan will be with us forever. One moment that I was glad to be a part of was the Celebration of Dan's innovative teaching games that was held at SFE in Essex. Over 30 tennis players from ages 5-18 attended! One Tennis Pro came as far as Boston to help facilitate this event. The event started with a tribute to Dan's attention to the most finite detail of making sure each shoelace was tied. We then took a minute to observe the four court Tennis Center with a suspended running track that Dan helped create! It was at this moment I realized that we were living out Dan's Dream of Growing the Game. Over the next three hours each participant experienced the many games that Dan designed and implemented to help take each one of them to the next level. I left those courts feeling honored to have been a part of a community event in Dan's name. I am sure it will not be the last.
Thanks to all who were able to attend and or lend their support,
Nick Marchand

Blessed that our paths did cross...

Crossing Paths……
My path crossed with Dan’s a handful of times…..the first time we met, it was playing indoor soccer together at the old indoor center in Williston. The thing I remember most was his passion for the game. He was intense and driven to win, but winning did not matter as much as putting in the effort to win. As a teammate, you couldn’t help but get caught up in his enthusiasm and love for the game.
For the next 10 years or so our paths did not cross very often. We were more on parallel paths, as we were both coaching soccer teams for Essex United. I was coaching the boys and Dan was coaching the girls. Both of our teams enjoyed success over the years. And usually at the Essex United tournament, I could catch a few moments watching his team play in an exciting semi-final or final. It was always fun to watch his excitement as the girls attained success; he provided such a great atmosphere for them to excel in.
The next time our paths crossed it also involved soccer, but this time it was with the Essex Varsity Girls team. I was helping Bill O’Neil coach, and Dan was the super fan on the other side of the field with either a camcorder or a 35mm camera in his hand capturing the events of the 2005 season. However, there was one particular moment that will be forever etched in my memory…..the girls had just won the State Championship in overtime (with Gabby providing the assist for the winning goal) and Dan was moving around the field capturing the moment with his camera, snapping picture after picture. Wearing that patented ear-to-ear smile of his. I can’t ever recall seeing a man so happy. Of course he was happy for Gabby. But he was also happy for the entire team, after all he had coached most of them sometime during their soccer career. In fact a great deal of the credit for the way the girls played that day had to go back to those early years with Dan….they refused to loose. I still smile when I think of one of the “Kodak” moments….The winning goal had just gone in, the field and sidelines erupted, the girls on the field raced to the goal, the rest of the team sprinted onto the field to meet them, at the same time hundreds of the fans sprinted onto the field. They all met at the top of the penalty box and created a huge pile of bodies (at least eight deep), and there was Dan laying on the ground about 5 yards away taking pictures of the bottom of this human pyramid, capturing the moment, as only he could. I feel honored that he gave me one of the photos from that day, it captured the moment like nothing that could be said in 10,000 words.
Today our paths crossed again…..which is why I am sitting here late on a Saturday night recalling the day’s events and thinking about how it started. With a funeral for a friend, Dan Bonfigli ….a man taken from us, long before any of us were ready. If you must know, I hate funerals, I always have. They are vivid reminders of my own mortality, and always leave me depressed and in a state of sadness. But for some reason, this funeral was different…oh it had its folks dressed in dark colors with somber faces, some with tears…..but for some unknown reason today there was this underlying feeling of peace that crept over me. It started with the music and grew stronger with each passing moment, from the bible readings from Gabby and Kim, to comforting and uplifting sermon about God’ grace, and finally to the dedication from Dan’s brothers. It was just a constant reminder of the legacy that Dan left behind and the fact that he is now at peace in heaven. So as I sit here reflecting and writing this note, I feel lucky and blessed that that our paths did cross a couple of times in life. And I found great assurance in today’s service that our paths will cross again…..in the presence of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Dan we are all going to miss you. But that huge infectious smile of yours has left an everlasting mark of joy on all our hearts.

What we have done for others...

"What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal."

from Caitlin Spaeth

I learned so much...

Kathy, Gabby, and the rest of Dan's family;
During the few short years that Dan was my tennis instructor, I learned so much. Kathy and Gabby, I know that so many people have told you this, but it's because that's how good of a coach he is. I know that I am one of so many students that Dan has taught and made into better players. He was tough, and I know my peers, my fellow students and I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. A lesson with Dan was always fun and intense, and it always made me feel gratified when it was time to walk off the court. I always felt the need to put in 101% effort with Dan, which is how it should be. He taught me to hustle and go for every impossible shot, because sooner or later you hit it in, and that makes every missed attempt worth it. Gabby, you are the proof of what an excellent instructor he was. I know that i did not get to know Dan as much as some others, but even so the lessons he taught me will stay with me for the rest of my tennis carrer.
Sincerely,Joey Behlendorf
p.s. dan, you should have seen this volley i had yesterday.

His presence and advice helped me...

Gabby,
I want to let you know how much of an impact your dad had on my life. He saw something in me not only as a soccer player and tennis player, but as a person as well. His belief and confidence in me has been what has pushed me these last 8 years to be the best I can be. In u10 Essex United soccer we were probably the only team doing sprints in practice. It was tough as just a kid, but the challenge that he created for us has made me a stronger person through and through. Even when he wasn't our coach his presence and advice on the sidelines is what helped me through many games and matches. As we developed throughout the years he was continuously there, and his excitement to watch us succeed kept growing with time. I will never forget the passion that he exhibited watching us accomplish even the smallest feats. His motivation made me come to truly love the game. Without his coaching and inspiration I would not be where I am today. I am so thankful for all the things that he taught me and I will carry his words of wisdom with me for the rest of my life. Gabby I am so lucky and glad that I have you as a friend and as a teammate. I hope that our journey will continue together, and that we can accomplish even greater goals because of the belief your dad embedded within us. I love you and I am here for you.
Teammates for life.

Very much an older brother to me...

Family and Loved Ones of Dan:
I just learned of Dan's passing and of his heroic struggle. I've been away from Vermont for a long time, but my few years there were formative and a time I will always cherish. My memories lie in people, not just the place, and Dan's face is one of the first in my mind when I pine for my time in Burlington. The big lug was very much an older brother to me when I moved to Burlington as a callow lad, we became fast friends, and he introduced me to the tennis scene. As a result, I got my feet back on the ground (because of his own groundedness), and I think it's fair to say that my life took off from there. I loved working and playing with him on the tennis court, and I admired the way he lived his life off the court. Never underestimate the impact a 25 year-old man has on a 20 year-old kid - at least one who is paying attention.
I am sure you have heard many stories like this, and from people like me who are coming out of the woodwork. I'm an example of how Dan's life, and his massive spirit, extends beyond the immediate and into the world. I was just a passerby in Burlington, but I've carried a piece of him with me wherever I've been.
My thoughts are with you as you honor and celebrate Dan.
Peter Fayroian

He will truly be missed...

Dan Bonfigli Master's Cup and Dan Bonfigli Day

Today is a sad day for the New England tennis community. We've lost one of our brightest stars. Dan Bonfigli was a tiredless ambassador of tennis. His coaching of players at all levels, and particularly with juniors and high school players ,was recognized all over the state. Dan was a fine player, an excellent teacher, and a phenomenal promoter of the game . His volunteer work as a member of the Jeff Stone Memorial Tennis Tournament Committee will be sorely missed. Several years ago Dan initiated the Jeff Stone/Vermont High School Tournament, with the winners earning a berth in the main draw. Dan also served as the official photographer of those tournaments. In Dan's honor the Master's Division of the Jeff Stone tournament will be known as the Dan Bonfigli Master's Cup. Last summer, immediately following the Jeff Stone tournament, I ran a Dan Bonfigli Day at the Windridge Tennis Camp in Roxbury. Dan was so full of energy and enthusiasm that day!!! He participated in the wooden racquet event and followed that up with nine holes of golf. Therefore, in Dan's memory, I would like to continue that wonderful day on an annual basis, with all of the proceeds going to Dan's family. Dan Bonfigli: Family Man; Friend; Promoter, Ambassador of Tennis. We will miss you. You have left us for greener pastures.
Your warmth and friendship will remain in our hearts forever.

I play for his smile...

Gab,
the thing I treasure most about your dad was his smile. Not his regular one, the one we got when we absolutely rocked the field (or court haha). Whenever he greeted us with that smile as we came off the field I knew we had kicked butt. Nothing made me feel better. And nothing made me want to be better as much as the pride and passion that his smile infused in me. That huge smile from ear to ear with every tooth showing, those eyes ablaze, and those fists pumping were the ultimate praise. He challenged us from day 1. U10 sprint to the trees and back, find the triangles, go baby! He constantly raised the bar for us and I cannot even articulate how thankful I am for all his help with my game. He truly cared. Every ounce of confidence I possess I attribute to him. He refused to accept anything less from us. I never respected anyone more than your father. His intensity and competitiveness will always be with me. Every time I step on the field I play for his smile. You know I'm here. I love you Gab.
Co-captains for life.

Kind word for everyone...

I have many fond memories of Danny while we grew up together in the 1970's living near Lamplight Acres, attending Williston Central School and Champlain Valley UHS. I always thought of Danny as a genuinely friendly guy who was incredibly athletic, but never a "show off." He always had a kind word for everyone and was never pompous or overbearing. We worked together with my sister Denise and brother Dennis at the McDonald's on Williston road during the summer of 1976, and the fun times kept the work sane and bearable, even while bus after bus of Olympic athletes and supporters heading to the ’76 Olympics in Montreal, Canada kept us so incredibly busy. Danny and Denise had great times at the front counter serving all the customers, while Dennis and I slaved over the hot grill wishing we we’re up front with the cooler temperatures that the lobby afforded. I'm so sad to hear he's gone but so glad that I was one of many who got to know him and enjoy his contagious charm.

So many fond memories...

Inspiring

Dan, I benefitted so much having shared time with you last year. I have so many fond memories of the year I got to know you. You were inspiring to everyone. The strength and determination you showed in traveling all over the country to see Gabby play last season was out of this world. You were always so positive. I gained so much being in your presence and I am grateful to some of the life conversations we had. I hope I can be as strong a father and husband to my family as you were in yours. My fondest memory of the entire 2007 soccer season at UVM was sitting on a couch with you at Emily Milbank's house and drinking a cup of coffee. We talked about coaching and you shared with me an invaluable anecdote on how players grow, as people and as athletes. It will remain with me for the rest of my life. I loved seeing you in California. I loved walking out of the hotel in Binghamton and bumping into you. U2 will always remind me of you - and how I was lucky to be inspired by you.
God Bless You Dan - Thank You
James Franklin

How fortunate for those whose lives he touched...

I just received an e-mail from Lori Brown sending on the very sad news of Dan's passing on. My warmest thoughts and prayers are with all of Dan's loving family. As a newcomer to Vermont, I had the great honor of working with Dan on the Jeff Stone Memorial Tennis Tournament. Although I did not know Dan well, I have always felt that he was someone that made such a marked impression on every person he met. He was, and will always be, an extraordinary person, and I am so very proud to have known him, tho for way too brief a period of time. How truly fortunate for those whose lives he touched and impacted so greatly. He will always be in a very special place within our hearts. Our family sends our deepest sympathies and love,
Barbara, Al and Jason Gross

An angel in my life...

Dan you've touched my life in such a positive way and I'll never forget you. You will live on in me and everyone that you've impacted and you'll always be in my heart. I'm honored to have you as an angel in my life, and I know you'll be looking out for all of us. Thank you for all that you've done! I love you and miss you,
Jessie Jones

You all have been such an inspiration to me...

Everyday life leads us a little further along a path of our own; every once in a while criss-crossing it with the paths of others. I am blessed to have such a wonderful family grace my life. I cant even begin to describe all of the opportunities I have seen and experienced that began with you three. you all have been so much of an inspiration to me. Between leading me into a sport that turned into a great passion of mine to being a second family to me. Who would have thought that 9 years ago when Dan asked if I wanted to come play on his soccer team because he didnt have enough players it would have turned into something would consume my summers with travels to near by places and days spent in the changing weather to even something that helped persuade to choose where I went to college. He was always ready to take any situation and make it an opportunity to learn for anyone who would listen. Thank you so much for all of the love and care you have given and shared with me over these many years. I hope in these trying times you can feel my love returned to you both even more than ever.
So much love,
Cait Spaeth

This letter was written by Courtney, the Club Manager at Sports and Fitness Edge, and sent today to all the employees

Dear Friends,
He fought the good fight. At 2:15 am, Dan Bonfigli was surrounded by his family as he passed away. It is with great sorrow that we say good bye to our dear friend, co-worker and mentor. No one can ever be prepared for the loss of a loved one. No one ever wants to say good bye. We can, however, take comfort in knowing that Dan’s legacy will continue on eternally. We’ll see his smile in all who smile at us. We’ll feel his passion in everything we do. We’ll know his commitment in the programs that he started which will continue on for years to come. We’ll see the skills that he taught others, as his students continue to practice and refine their tennis. We know that the love that he shared with us will be passed down to all generations who follow. There is a part of Dan in all who have been touched by him. His legacy will live on. It’s amazing to see how much impact one person had on so many lives. Please visit his blog at www.bonfiglifamily.blogspot.com to read the words of gratitude that people have shared. Although it’s sad to know that Dan is no longer with us, we can celebrate the moments we had with him. I am grateful to have Dan in my life, and I will cherish these fond memories forever.

Thank you,
Courtney Kutler

You always believed in us...

I just want to say that, Dan, I am really going to miss your smiling face and positive encouragement next year at our soccer games. Thank you for the mugs you gave us with the chocolate inside after we finally won at Centennial! You always believed in us and your support has had a huge impact on my life since I first met you when you were one of my U12 Essex United coaches. You taught me how to play soccer and told me that if I practiced and wanted to be good, I could be good without a doubt, and that has honestly stayed with me nine years later now that I am playing at UVM. I don' think I would be playing soccer today if it wasn't for you and I will never forget the impact you've had on my life. You really are one of the most positive and influential people in my life. Even when I got to take a few tennis lessons from you, you had the same incredible ability to motivate me and I have yet to meet another coach and person like you. I'm glad that you got to watch Gabby play this year and score a goal and also that you are now in peace. Thank you for everything.
God bless.

How great he looked and how happy...

I have only known Dan for a short time being a member on the USTA New England Board.
What a wonderful person!!!..and how engaging it was to sit and listen to him speak in details of ways to develop and grow the game of tennis and more. He will be missed tremendously. I saw him at the board meeting in December and thought how great he looked and how happy. This is the memory I will always keep with me of him.
Warmest regrets to his family.

Made life brighter...

I know Dan as a comrade in the New England Tennis Teaching Profession. We would see each other at the various regional and national conferences and I remember many personal conversations with Dan and fondly remember the passion he had for teaching and the coaching profession and how much he cared for his students. We all do our best to lead by example - my lasting impression of Dan is that of a man who walked his talk and made life brighter for those under his guidance. We will miss him.
Fondly,
Tim Smith (USPTA N.E. Professional)

Dan made each and every one of us feel like we were the ones that had that special connection with him....

Dan is the man that opened the door for my tennis teaching career, and I will be forever grateful for that. In the summer of 2006 I met with Dan and shared my dreams of teaching tennis. Even though Dan did not have the need for a fourth tennis pro he hired me. What amazes me is how Dan made each and every one of us feel like we were the ones that had that SPECIAL CONNECTION with him. After reading all of these wonderful life experiences shared with Dan I now know that this was another tremendous gift that Dan possessed as a teacher. Thank you Dan for all that you have taught me and I look forward to passing on your passion for tennis with students for many years to come!
Thank you Dan

Lasting impression

My greatest memories of Dan go all the way back to when our family lived in Texas with the Bonfiglis in the early 1980's. As the Headmaster’s son I was allowed to roam around Allen Academy and spend time with the maintenance men and other workers around campus, but my favorite thing to do was to sneak into Dan’s PE classes. I would do my best to hide in the back row when everyone had to sit on the basketball court when he would take roll. He never got mad at me for adding an additional number to the class size and always let me participate. I remember vividly the amount of fun I had in those classes and the time he even took to help me learn the skills of the various sports we were playing. As everyone knows Dan is a fantastic coach. His ability to not only show me the proper way to do things, but more importantly, just letting me enjoy sports and the act of playing as a young kid left a lasting impression. Anyone who has ever spent any time around Dan was not only captivated by his amazingly positive attitude, but also changed for the better by the joy of life that he shared with so many. I just wish I had lived closer to Dan to get to spend more time with him. Maybe then I would be able to keep up with my dad on the tennis court. He spent way too much time playing with Dan for me to ever close the gap! Dan will truly be missed, but always remembered for the amazing impression he left on all the people that had the chance to meet him.

Life

Heartfelt condolences...

Dan and I spent several late nights (after everyone else had gone to bed) at USTA meetings just talking about life and family and tennis. On the subject of tennis he patiently explained his concepts to me, which I have used here to change the approach we use in Junior Development.Spending time with him was just amazing. My heartfelt condolences,

On and off the court...

Dan-
I cannot express how much you have influenced my life both on and off the court. In addition to the tennis skills I have acquired under your leadership since age three, I have also learned invaluable lifelong lessons in sportsmanship, work ethic, and friendship. Your determination and persistence when trying to improve my game gave me confidence even when I was struggling. I am inspired by your dedication to the sport of tennis and will never forget the fond memories I have of the many years that I learned tennis from you, not least among them the trip to the regionals in Virginia. I will always carry with me the lessons I learned from you and will apply the skills you've taught me to my future matches in high school and beyond. We are all thinking of you and your family.
Love, Nathan Hauke

Thoughts and prayers are with you...

Dan -
We have known each other for over 15 years and you are such an inspiration to me. Recently, at the USPTA World Conference at Saddlebrook in Sept, at the USTA NE meeting in June at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport and back in October in Westborough, MA at the USTA NE Board of Directors meeting. We played doubles and had a great time on the tennis court. We shared the bus ride back to the hotel together and had a great conversation about our dreams for pre-school tennis. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Dan.
Love, Marcy Rubinstein

Near and dear to our hearts...

Hi Dan,
You are such a special and vital part of our association and have done so much to improve the quality of the tennis teaching professionals as well as being a great friend of all the USPTA/NewEngland tennis professionals.
You are very near and dear to our hearts and are in our thoughts and prayers each day. Your fighting spirit, determination and courageto overcome this obstacle has gained you the respect and admiration of our entire tennis community. You are such a special friend.
I am so glad you were able to attend the convention in Saddlebrookand I treasure those moments we had together and especially hitting tennis balls with you on the court.
We all send our love to you and your family.
Avis Murrray, speaking for all your friends in the USPTA/New EnglandDivision. We love you, Dan.

Tennis was your vehicle to reach so many people...

I just wanted to let you know I am thinking of you and your family. It was a great pleasure to spend time with you this September at the USPTA national convention at the HEAD/Penn hospitality room still sharing your ideas to promote tennis. It showed me your drive to never give up and show everyone what a strong guy you are in life. Your tennis was just your vehicle to reach so many people. You are an inspiration to many.
With much love,Amy Amy Wishingrad

Outstanding contributions...

Hi Dan,
Lots of memories during our time working for USTA Vermont - even before it was USTA Vermont! I'm remembering the clinic I helped you with at the Boys and Girls Club years back. That was one of the first things we did...even before our time on the New England Board. And the great tournaments you put on to raise money for any number of charities. The Wooden Racquet one was one of the best! I'm so glad that you have been chosen to receive the Gardner Chase Memorial Award. You truly deserve it for all your outstanding contributions to tennis in New England and especially Vermont. I'm also grateful to you for all you have taught Samantha. I know Anna hasn't been around as long as Sam, but she has learned from you, too. Thanks so much. You and Kathy and Gabby are in my thoughts and prayers. Fondly, Joan Wulfson

A friend and a coach...

Hey Dan,
Just wanted to send you a note to make sure that you know how much of a positive influence you have been on me. Your love and dedication to the game of tennis has really inspired me to succeed and continue my love for the game. You not only taught me tennis skills but more importantly about sportsmanship and the value of friendship. I will always think of you as both a friend and a coach. It was very special being able to spend some time on the court with you this past November, it is a special memory I will always have. My family and I are thinking about you and your family always and keep you and your family in our prayers.
Love, Jenna Goedde

Impressed with your dedication to the game.....

Hi Dan,
I have gotten to know you through your volunteerism with the USTA. I have been with USTA NE over the past eight years, and I have always been impressed with your dedication to the game, and to kids, whether coaching junior team tennis or running your local programs. At the board meetings you always offer a great deal of insight and words of wisdom to any subject or discussion. You make a positive impact in people’s lives. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.Take Care, Eric Driscoll

You are an inspiration...

Daniel,
Without your friendship over these years, I wouldn’t have achieved half the things I’ve done in tennis. I can credit a great part of my success to being able to “steal” your ideas! To suggest you’re an inspiration to all of us is an understatement. My prayers are with you and your family... All the best,Ron

Send our love...

Dan-
I will always remember the great time we had in San Francisco with UVM Soccer. You were so kind to transport me to and from St. Mary's to watch our daughters play, and though I promised to navigate, you certainly didn't need my help. If I remember right, you had us taking shortcuts that weren't even on the map! .Alison and I send our love to you, Kathy and Gabby. Darleen Hemphill GO CATS!!

Always remember those wonderful times...

Dear Dan,
Thank you so much for being there at Racquet's Edge and teaching tennis to Dan and Ben for many years. We will always remember those wonderful times in Junior Tennis Academy. We are thinking of you and your family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.Love, Diane Rippa, David Rome, Benjamin Rome and Daniel Rome

It is easy to see what makes your family so special...

Dan, Kathy and Gabby, It is easy to see what makes your family so special. Your love, strength and courage are inspirational. I have been so blessed to have worked with Dan for over 12 years, along the way getting to know Kathy and watching Gabby grow into an amazing young woman and collegiate athlete. Dan, I am forever grateful for your passion and dedication in building the foundation for the Racquet’s Edge Tennis Program. You paved the way for me to follow my dreams in becoming a tennis professional. You showed me how to expect more from players, to think outside the box and most importantly to not be afraid of failure. You encouraged me to go out on a limb, to do things different than others and to be unique by using my strengths and being creative. You said that is what would make me stand apart from others in the field even though sometimes that meant dealing with failure. Thank You! It is easy to see that is how you have approached your life. You always stood above the crowd, excelled in your profession and accomplished so much in your career. You did things your way (which was always topnotch) and fought for things you believed in, never afraid to fail. You touched countless people’s lives in so many different ways. I will always hold on to the memories of us working together. We were a great team and no one will ever replace the way we complemented each other out there on the tennis court. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the opportunity to learn from you and for our lives to have shared the same path for so many years. Love, Tammy

You leave a legacy...

Hello Bonfigli Family~
A quick note to let you know we are thinking of you. You have all touched our lives for many years, starting around 1995 when we first coached U10 Soccer together. Gabby and Erika started a long journey of playing soccer together all the way through High School. Through the years, we have been to so many games together and watched our daughters and their teammates achieve some incredible successes...and yes shared some heartbreaking close calls. Thank you for the tremendous help and inspiration you have provided to us. Your love of and passion for soccer elevated our teams to heights we could not have dreamed of. It has been great watching Gabby grow and turn into such a fine young lady and athlete. She is now on a path to reaching her full potential. Dan - you have touched so many lives in such a positive manner. Your creativity in your coaching was awe inspiring. I learned so much from working with you on all the teams we conspired on. There was never a perceived boundry for how high you could lift the team. Your brave fight against your illness is just another example of the strength and character with which you attacked life. You leave a legacy of many young people who are much better off for meeting you. The Bonfigli Family has shown us so much kindness through the years. We are thankful for the time we shared together. Know that your family has a special place in our hearts. The Senn's - Eric, Susan, Erika & Alex

Here's what I wish...

Dan
Here's what I wish:
1. We could have smacked it around a little bit..I think I would have taken you..If you played with your shoes untied..and your headband occasionally fell over your eyes on close calls..
2. We could have played doubles.Me and Brec vs. You and Creeds. We'd have to play on clay-- and wait for Creeds to wrap his hamstrings... and his ankles.. and his wrist...and warm up for an hour.
3. Everyday could be as enlightening as that first day.."Elbows up and in when you shoot that jumper, Dan"Trading rings and tennis racquets with BrecWe drank coffee for 2-3 hours.. I don't know if it was the caffeine or the experience..but it felt like a 2-3 minutes...
4. Someone walks into Brec's life and has the same impact on him...that you've had on me..

After reading these stories,I feel inspired to make the most of each day...

I just have to say it has been a privilege to read about the wonderful contributions that Dan has made to so many people's lives. After reading these stories, I feel inspired to make the most of each day. If I touch even a few people's lives the way that Dan has I will consider myself to have been a very, very successful person. Thanks Dan for reminding me of what is really important! You and your family remain in our prayers, Lisa Mousley

Learned so much from you about strength, love, and friendship...

Dear Dan,
you have been a wonderful friend, a great coach, an amazing teacher, and most importantly, an inspiration. Over the last seven years since I started taking lessons at SFE when I was five, you have taught me about so much more than tennis. Whenever you gave me a pointer about my strokes and strategy, there always seemed to be a tip about life as well as advice that would greatly help my game. At one of my last lessons over the summer you told me that it's not about winning; it's about learning. During your battle with cancer I have learned so much from you about strength, love, and friendship. This is a gift that I will remember and treasure the most forever. You have been the best friend and teacher that I could ever ask for and I thank you so much for that. You are always in my thoughts and prayers. Lots of love, Sam Wulfson

Who else but you, Dan....

Good Morning Dan Kathy & Gabby
Can I say our only connection is soccer - no I don't think. Our relationship has grown over the years to include respect, camaraderie and most importantly friendship. All of the hours we have shared on the side lines cheering for and against each other have contributed to our very special and unique relationship. Who else but you, Dan, could explain over and over without the least impatience the same rules and regulations to the goalie motherwho never seems to remember - "why are they are getting another freekick?". I can not count how many times I have relied on your explanation to understand a call or lack of as the case may be.Of course there was the time I did not think I could ever talk to yourfamily again after the fabulously famous free kick of Gabby's that gave Essex the state championship Eliza's senior year - I knew I would, but Iadmit it took some time...The UVM fall season would not have been nearly as fun with out your passion and enthusiasm for the game. What a thrill for us all when Gabby scored her first college goal! Thank you for always being ready to hold my hand when those penalty kicks are being taken. You have been an inspiration on how valuable desire, will power and strength of character can be when we are faced with insurmountable obstacles in life.We have many treasured memories of soccer victories shared not to mention our wonderful conversations about life in general. Dan you are the best!!!!!! Kathy and Gabby you are lucky women to have Dan as your main man.Hugs and kisses
Jessie, Jeffrey & Eliza

Dan is a man of principle...

I can't believe I am just finding out about this website. Dan and I go way back to my beginnings in tennis, 1986 or 87 I think! Dan was the tennis pro at Quarry Hill ( a gem!)...his lessons were always about the game...and always about life. I'll never forget when I was feebly trying to hit a specific shot, he asked me what was I thinking when I hit that shot. I said what? He repeated the question; I was very annoyed and answered I don't have a clue! He said that if I couldn't tell what I was thinking he couldn't help me. Now there's a life lesson for sure......Dan introduced me to his beautiful, wonderful wife Kathy....which has been years of good tennis and a great friendship. Son Eric also took lessons from Dan - I wanted him to learn the game right from the beginning and from an excellent pro. Both son and I recently won a tennis championship so Dan did a lot right! Dan is a man of principle...lives life on his terms. He's thoughtful about what he does; sees the inside and outside of whatever he is doing. My thoughts, prayers, love and affection go to Dan,Kathy, Gabby and family as Dan lives his life.
xoxoxo Donna and Eric

Genuine love for our kids...

Hi Dan,
I am not sure where to begin. You have been helping David and Daniel Ro with their tennis from beginning. I am thankful that you can polish off some of your tennis skills to our kids. I am also greatful for your genuine love for our kids. Your leaderships and good ethics on the court really helped David and Daniel to perform their best on the court but off the court as well. You definitely touched our lives and I really appreciate your kindness. Love and we will keep you in our prayer.
Chris, Una, David, and Daniel Ro

Let go of the fear and love the game...

Dan and Kathy,
Please know that our family keeps you in our thoughts. Dan has taught me volumes about parenting and tennis and I will always be grateful for these lessons. He shared insights about my son's growth, motivation and social development that have made parenting infinitely easier. Dan speaks truth to fear. At so many tournaments Dan saw me frustrated and sad, and gently suggested I let go of the fear and just love the game. Isn't this a pretty clear statement of how he lives? I love him for that wisdom and for being such an admirable human being. His love of color brightens the courts at Racquet's Edge. Those funky glasses, his love of photography and his persistence in thinking outside the box all set him in a class of his own. His wisdom goes far beyond the tennis court. And as I read notes from others in this blog I can' t help but notice how many people feel the same way I do! You are surrounded by love because you have built a community based on love and truth. Take care. Deb Shannon and Family

You put us on the map...

Hey Dan-. . . . What's this about talking over the divider at RE#2! What could there have possibly been to say about "Bobby D." Truly though, the best professional accomplishment you achieved at RE really did have to do with Bobby D. and keeping the Tennis Center true to your vision. I'll never forget hearing all of that noise below my office window and looking down to see you and Bobby D. having a heated philosophical conversation (which wasn't quite what we referred to it at the time though). What an orientation to the wonderful world of Racquet's Edge for our Tennis Director, on your second day (you didn't even have a chance to take off your slick Miami Italian loafers) and hearing that you better get some tennis programs underway . . . . or you'd be managing . . . . . that dreaded "m" word . . . a multi-purpose area, with volleyball standards being installed as he spoke! Well, I guess that conversation never needed to be revisited; you took that challenge and ran, literally-throughout the country. You put us on the map Dan, and with more thanks than I have ever been able to express, you took us all on the ride of a lifetime. Not many people share their dreams, impact so many lives and make such life altering progress in such a relatively short period of time. Our endless conversations will be deep within my heart for the rest of my life. I am so thankful to Kathy and Gabby for the many years of their understanding and willingness to share you.
You will always be loved. Jan & Matthew Riordan

Your influence carries across towns, states, countries...

Dan, We continue to pray for you and your family. I know it’s been a tough battle; no one has fought harder with such optimism and strength as you have. You are such an inspiration to all of us! I can’t thank you enough for the advice and encouragement you gave to me both personally and professionally. I especially appreciate your listening and support when I came to you with concerns about my dad’s cancer. You really helped me to process my feelings, and you gave me hope. As the tennis director at Sports & Fitness Edge, you shared your passion and creativity on the courts and around the club. Your commitment to the club is amazing! You have touched so many lives, and your influence carries across towns, states, and countries! Your legacy will continue on through the people whose hearts you’ve touched and whose lives you’ve inspired. We pray for peace for you. Know that your family will continue to be loved and supported by this enormous community of which you will always be a part. We love you.Courtney Kutler

Absolutely selfless in your dedication....

Mr. Bonfligli,
I met you when I was an over-energetic kid badly in need of an outlet, and you rescued my poor mother by agreeing to help coach theEssex United U10 girls team. You taught me so much more than soccer.Your passion and dedication to the sport was contagious. You always pushed me to work harder, run faster, think smarter, and give my best. You made me a smart player, turned me into a leader and taught me how blood, sweat and tears can pay off. I would not be where I am today if it was not for your support, mentorship and love. What is most important is the sheer number of people you have helped in the same way. You have been absolutely selfless in your dedication to athletics and to coaching. Your hard work and passion has also shown through in your family as Gabby has become like another sister to me, both on and off the field. Not only do I see you when she smiles, but you come through in every competition she, and your many other athletes, compete in. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Love you all! Kristen Bednar

30 year friendship

Dear Kathy, Dan, and Gabby,
Just the idea that we have known each other for close to 30 years now after meeting at UVM is unreal, especially knowing that Gabby is there now. The fun memories hold a special place in our hearts-our UVM days, your wedding, our trips to see you in Florida, lots of special times. Our thoughts and prayers are with you today and always.Love, Rick, Phyllis, Liana and Robert

I will forever treasure the opportunity...

Dear Dan, Kathy and Gabby …. I can’t believe that the past 14 years have gone by so quickly. It seems like just yesterday I was just meeting Dan for the first time as a young manager in the Health Club Business. We shared an office for some time, and I can remember the laughter we shared across that simple little divider. There were a lot of great moments we had together….
The dance offs we had at all the Christmas parties
The day we battled it out in the mall over badmitten
The numerous conversations about “Bobby D”
And of course our trip to San Francisco, watching you be honored for all that you do, and the party on Saturday. I really appreciated the time you spent with me most recently over breakfasts. I know you know now how much you meant to me and my family. I will forever treasure the opportunity I had to spend with you and most importantly, I am forever thankful that Jacob had the opportunity to experience you in his life. God Bless You- Bob Fredette

You taught them how to be a good person...

Dear Dan,
We have known you since our daughter Hope started to learn playing tennis when she was in middle school. Our son Cody joined his sister a couple years later. Driving kids to Raquet's Edge weekly has been our routine for years. You taught them not only how to playing tennis, but more importantly how to be a good person. You are such a important role model in our children's life. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and passion for tennis with our children. We think about you often. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. Love, Jun, Limin, Hope and Cody

Inspiration as a family...

Dan, Kathy and Gabby:
I just want you all to know how much you are all in our thoughts and prayers in this trying time. You are an inspiration as family through the poise, grace and strength you have exhibited through Dan's battle with cancer.

You believed in me...

Dear Dan, I just wanted to say thank you for the influence you've had on my tennis and my life. I appreciate your kindness and patience more than you know. I'm sure I wasn't easy to deal with most of the time, but you believed in me at a time when I didn't believe in myself. For that I am so grateful. You have had such a positive impact on my life and I think about you often. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Love, Kelley Jenkins

Positive influence on the world around you...

Dear Bonfigli's:You have been in my prayers constantly, and I'm so sorry to hear that Dan has taken a turn for the worse. Dan, you are such a fighter and such a positive influence on the world around you. I met you and grew to know you through the Jeff Stone Tournament committee, and I will never forget your tireless energy and awesome creativity. I have meant to write to you for months now to thank you for the beautiful picture that was printed in the Burlington Free Press - it was gorgeous and I was happy to see that you were still out taking pictures. Thinking of you all and sending my love, Lori Brown

You illuminated the dreams of our youth...

Dear Dan:
We met for the first time during last year’s preparations for the Jeff Stone Tennis Tournament. Within minutes I was struck by your presence, warmth, grace, and class. It was obvious to me that your head and heart were open to others, and that your passion for sports and sportsmanship illuminated the dreams of our youth. Throughout the months leading to the Tournament I gained increasing respect for your commitment and dedication, your unceasing wit and ready smile. I have kept you and your family in my daily prayers since our first meeting. Your grace and depth of caring for others is a model for us all. Thank you and peace. Ed Wilkens, Stern Center

You Made a World of Difference

Hi Dan,-
You are one courageous and passionate human being. Know that you made a World of Difference. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
God bless you and your family-
Dan (Santorum)

If it hadn't been for you...

I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for all you did to encourage me with my Creative Tennis Teaching presentation. When I first met you after my first seminar contest in 1999 you encouraged me to try it again in the future and made some suggestions. Later when I developed the gymnastic ribbons routine I wasn't sure how good it was but when a tennis pro of your status thought so highly of it. It really made an impression on me and encouraged me to further develop the modifications on the ribbons and to try some other creative ideas that are now incorporated into my presentation. I would not have presented again in the seminar contest in 2005 without your encouragement and high impressions of the ideas. I would not have had the chance to win that and present at Marco Island in 2005. I would not have been doing this presentation in 2006 at the USPTA New England Convention, nor been invited to the Florida USPTA conference in 2007 and now the PTR Symposium next month. If it had not been for your encouragement and suggestions none of this would have been happening. I had some ideas but I needed a "push" and someone who believed that my ideas were worth teaching the tennis pro community. So I want to thank you with all my heart because you were the person that God used to make me believe these ideas and concepts were worth presenting at seminars. I do not have many friends in> the tennis pro community. And though we only met at seminars and a few phone> calls and e-mails you were the one I looked up to the most and looked forward to sharing with at each convention. When anyone ever asked me who I would want working with me if I owned my own tennis club it was you. Remember we even talked once about getting a tennis club in North or South Carolina someday! So thanks again. I owe you a lot. I also want to take a moment to share with you something I wish we had talked about before. I wrote a book once many years ago. Not on tennis. But on why I believed that God existed and why the resurrection of Jesus was a historical event and in the book I detailed some very solid historical evidence for the resurrection. The resurrection as a fact in history provides us with the ultimate hope for those who are in Christ for as the apostle Paul says Jesus was the first fruits and we who trust in him as Savior will follow in resurrection someday of our bodies as well. Jesus himself said "IN MY FATHER'S HOUSE THERE ARE MANY MANSIONS. IF IT WERE NOT SO I WOULD HAVE TOLD YOU. I GO TO PREPARE A PLACE FOR YOU. SO THAT WHERE I AM YOU WILL ALSO BE" (John 14) Paul said to "to live is Christ to die is GAIN". So above all in Christ we have a hope different from all the world. Why did all the apostles and early followers become martyrs? Because they saw something that changed their lives and made them realize that death will be conquered. They had evidence for a hope. That evidence has never changed. I look forward to seeing you again someday. I look forward to that very much. God Bless and thanks. Your friend- Conrad McIntire Jr.

Angels Arrive!

Two of Kathy's dear friends arrived unexpectedly last night. They brought bags of groceries, made homemade soup, and brought love and support. All of us around the country, who can't be there right now, send our thanks to you!

Nothing but good will towards everyone

Hi Dan -
Suzie and I have heard through friends of the difficult turn in your health. We want you to know that our prayers are with you and your family. The strength and courage you have shown throughout your health battles has been inspiring to so many people. When my Mom was diagnosed with cancer I can clearly remember the discussions I had with you at BTC during the Jeff Stone Tournament, your advice and understanding were a comfort to me during a difficult time and of course your Mom, such a good friend to my mother, I'll always be grateful to both of you. I've always appreciated your attitude about competition, Fiercely competitive, yet never projecting anything but good will toward your opponent, and the ability to put athletic competition into perspective, such a great role model for Gabby, your students and us adults. Dan I have been out of tennis for a while. I now have a new racquet, one you donated to the auction at the tournament, because of that its' a pretty special frame, a nice reminder and an inspiration as I step back on the court. Our best thoughts and wishes to you and all of your family, Love Suzie and Bob

All our lives are better because of the Bonfiglis

Dear Dan, Kathy, and Gabby, We want you all to know that Dan has brought happiness and optimism to our lives since we had the good fortune to meet him. Suzanne has especially enjoyed and appreciated Dan's good work during the last several years. She has grown as a person and as a tennis player as aresult of love and attention she received from him on and off the court. As parents, Nancy and I want only the best for our child, and that is what Dan has been and given. We know that Suzanne will continue to carry the seeds of health and maturity he planted, and grow with them as she moves from childhood to adulthood. One can lavish no greater gift on children and their parents. Dan, you are loved and appreciated, and have our best wishes foryourself and your family, always.
Suzanne, Nancy, and Sandy

This message comes from Townsend Gilbert:
I first met Dan as his Tennis Coach At Twin Oaks,a lot of years ago,He played me in my World Record for continuous Tennis 100 hours in 1978. Dan and I have a love of the game and a deeper love of the process of learning . I have shared the stage with Dan in a number of National Presentation on Problem Solving and Guided Discovery styles of teaching,Dan was the expert. Last Sept we had our most recent event a presentation at the National USPTA convention in Fl. in went "Fantastic," I was the presenter and Dan backed me up. Any time things got sticky Dan jumped in, as always, and saved my butt with the Tec part.We (Carol my wife)and I spent a lot of time talking about life and things we all are going to do, to help kids learn, this is what we do best. Dan then did it. All our lives will be better if we take a part of Dan's spirit and put to use everyday. Dan is always going to be with us and he is part of my spirit everyday. I will be up to see him on Sat. best to everyone.

Priceless friendship

Wow, do we have some history with the Bonfiglis too. If it wasn't for Dan, and his teaching Kristen when to "Hit it" as the sweeper way back in the Essex United first all girls U-10 team, and giving Annie the confidence to play goalie, they may not have been the college athletes they are today! From the pig tails days with Gabby through high school soccer and nordic skiing, what a team they have been. Watching them grow up together, and the caring from Dan and Kathy, your friendship is priceless. Our love and prayers are with you all. MaryEllen, Tom, Kristen, Annie and Kevin Bednar

Perfect Role Model and Lifelong Friend

Dan and Kathy, We are with you in our hearts and spirits even if not in person. I will always remember you both for the following...Kathy bringing candied sweet potatoes to Thanksgiving. Never having made them before you made one for each person plus. I think we were still eating them Christmas! Dan, having the patience to work with Dino. And your team beat my team at the touch football game that Thanksgiving......I think you guys cheated! Ha! Love you three! Janice and John, Cristian and Dino

Hi Dan - Word among your many friends and supporters is that you're in an even tougher struggle right now. We're so very sorry to hear that news as you've been fighting such a good fight. Carol and I continue to keep you and your wonderful family in our prayers. You play such an important role in our lives! Besides being such a wonderful, caring individual, you have been a terrific positive influence on Mark and Andrew. We also so appreciate the friendship you had with Jeff and all the support you have given him through your work on the Jeff Stone Tournament. What a great idea you had to bring into the mix the best high school players! Thanks so much for all you do for the sport of tennis and for making sure that young people focus on sportsmanship as well as their skills. You are the perf ect role model. Keep fighting! Love, Barry & Carol

Our family has so many memories of the Bonfiglis - of Dan, Kathy and Gabby - that I can't possibly begin to list them all. But what I treasure are remembering the days when Helen and Gabby were just babies and we lived behind each other and could walk across the alley to visit and "hang out." Dan was always around with his camera to catch them at play. We have so many pictures that Dan took that I am going to make our very own Bonfigli-Piper memory box and pull it out whenever I need to! Remind Dan for me that my tennis was always best when he was on the court with me coaching me...speaking of tennis...remind him of the time we were playing doubles, Kathy was very pregnant, and fainted on the court. One of the few times I saw him a bit panicky! But, all was well, obviously! Mark and I always enjoyed our hanging out time with you guys, doing sports things, participating in your Bonfigli Fitness Fun Run, watching the girls together, and so much more! From Friday playdates to girl's night out happy hours...Kathy you are a true friend and the Pipers will always be here for you and Gabby too - and anytime you need time in sunny South Florida, our home is open to you. I am also very grateful for the weekend I had in Vermont. It was my first time to watch the Tour de France and Lance Armstrong, and Dan, you were very patient explaining how the race worked, etc. I still wear my LiveStrong bracelet and always will as I think of you and your bravery. We love you all very much and are keeping you in our thoughts and prayers....Love,Sheryl, Mark, Helen & Maggie

more love...

Dear Dan, Kathy and Gabby,Well, we have so much history and so many good memories of times together -- tennis, of course; and all the jokes and fun with the Racquet's Edge Management team. I totally give Dan credit for taking my son one summer, undoing some bad feelings he had about tennis and making him feel good about himself and his game -- all Dan's doing because he cares so deeply about kids. Hang in there -- you're surrounded by the best team ever, your family. And know that we are a part of your extended family and love you very much!!
Love, Karin and Dave Ericson

Special thanks from the Mousley family

Our 10 year old daughter Lexi has played with Dan over the past two years after we moved from the Middlebury area where she had been playing since she was 3 years old. It was a difficult time for our family. In a very short time, Dan had a profound impact on Lexi's life. Of course, Lexi's tennis skills improved steadily during her lessons. Dan contributed much more to Lexi's life, however. Dan read Lexi's personality perfectly which is no easy task! While Dan taught tennis, he often gently and directly spoke about important life lessons that he expected her to learn through the game. Dan taught Lexi to strive to do her best but to be kind to herself in the process. He taught her to have fun but to make a commitment. Most importantly he helped her to understand herself better and her self esteem improved greatly. We are so grateful to Dan. Thank you for understanding Lexi and what she needed. You made a profound impact on her life and she will carry those messages with her as she grows. Thanks also to Gabby for helping Dan to teach a private lesson with Lexi this summer which was a very, very important to her.
With sincere appreciation,Lisa and Gregg Mousley

Love and Support on Tuesday

Here are two comments that epitomize all of our feelings for Dan, Kathy, and Gabby:

"I've spent years hanging out with Dan and the bonfiglis, 3rd grade to the present. Dan has always been "the cool dad" and i've always enjoyed spending time with him during countless sleepovers at the bonfigli house. I could always count on him for bagels and cream cheese, and I had the privilege of being one of his models. I have nothing but great memories with dan, kathy and their wonderful daughter Gabby who amazes me every day with her strength and courage.I love and admire you Dan, thanks for hanging out with me over the years! I appreciate you more than you know.Much love, Jessie Jones

I was asked to pass this along:

"I had never played tennis before until a few years back when my husband suggested that I take some private lessons from Dan. Dan is a wonderful teacher. He made me feel confident and motivated. Dan is who inspired me to continue playing and keep up with the lessons. I thank him so much for that. Now I have a wonderful sport that I 'm gaining knowledge and skill in all the time. I deeply miss seeing him at the Racquet's Edge...it's not the same without him there. Please pass this along to Dan and thank him for inspiring so many people...he's quite a guy and I miss his smile! Monday, Jan. 21

Dan spent the weekend surrounded by friends and family. He enjoyed watching the Australian Open tennis matches, although Kathy says he is sleepy and somewhat confused. Dear friends, from his days in Miami, arrived from California to surprise him on Sunday. They brought love, warmth, comfort and support to Dan,Kathy, and Gabby and we are all grateful for their friendship. Please continue to pray for all the Bonfiglis. Kathy welcomes emails and or calls but please understand if they do not return your email or call right away. If you have a favorite memory of time with Dan that you would like to share, please feel free to send it to me at debcreeden@gmail.com or to add it to the comments below.

Peace and Love
Dan was admitted to the hospital this week. After a loving family meeting it was decided that he will go home today and begin Hospice. He will, of course, be comfortable. Kathy feels Dan is at peace with this decision and that he has entered a phase of acceptance. Gabby is at school and has access to counseling and support. Prayers and love are asked for at this time. Thank you all for your continuing support.

New Year's thoughts:
Dan, Kathy, and Gabby continue to be the amazing family we all know and love. They had some challenges in December and were busy with the holidays, hence the lack of blogging. Dan is comfortable and continues to battle and make the most of every day. Kathy and Gabby provide all the love, support, and encouragement anyone could hope for. Please continue to keep them all in your prayers and feel free to send your love via this blog! Happy New Year to everyone.
